THE ULTRASTRUCTURAL OBSERVATIONS IN THE KIDNEYS OF CHRONIC CADMIUM TOXICATION

Xu Tingling ;Jiang Fengrong ;Du Zhuoming(Department of Histology and Embryology Guiyand Medical College,Guiyang 55004)
The ultrathin sections of kidneys of 10 chronic cadmium toxication mice were studied with transmission electron microscope. The results showed that the ultrastructure of renal Corpuscles and epithelial cells of proximal convoluted tubules was injured. 1) Renal corpuscle: The endothelial cells of the capillaries became swollen and thickened. The Intraglomerularmesangium proliferated. The glomerular basement membranes showed thickened or split into several layers. There appeared electron-dense materials between the glomerular basement membrane and the endothellal cells.Sometimes the electron-dense materlals also appeared between the split layers of glomerular basement membrane.2)Epithelial cells of proximal convoluted tubule:The shape of the nuclei changed and size of the nuclei reduced. The mitochondria became swollen and the cristae of mitochondria broken. The microvilli on the free surface of the cells expanded and arranged irregularly. The hasal plasma membrane infoldngs reduced or disappeared. This study suggests that the ultrastructural changes of kidneys in chronic cadmium toxication were similar to the pathologic characteristics of glomerulonephritis.
