Brain Iron Metabolism:Cerebral Ischemia and Neurochemistry

Xiu Lili Wang Wei 1(Department of Human Anatomy and Histology and Embryology,Fujian Medical University,Fuzhou 350004,China) 2(Neurobiology Research Center,Fujian Medical University,Fuzhou 350004,China)
The accumulated evidence demonstrates that misregulation in brain iron metabolism is one of the initial causes for neuronal death in cerebral ischemia..Iron metabolic disorder usually happens following acute cerebral ischemia, which leads to excess free radical and iron ion accumulation and ultimately accelerate the cerebral injury.Research on the changes and mechanism of iron ion metabolic imbalance in brain will help us to find nosogenesis of cerebral ischemia injury and effective treatment thereafter. In the article, the recent advances in studies on neurochemistry and neuropathophysiology of brain iron metabolism and possible mechanism were reviewed.
