The Effect of Adding Urea to Ration of Different Nutritional Levels upon the pH Ammonia Nitrogen and Number of Protozoa in Rumen of Grey Goats

Experiments were done on three 20kg±grey goats fitted with fistulas in their rumens. Under house-feeding conditions, urea was added to two different nutritional level rations(2g for each 5kg body weight). The pH values of rumen fluid, ammonia nitrogen and protozoa numbers in the rumens of grey goats were measured after feeding.The results showed that after feeding the experimental animals on rations of higher DE and DCP contents, the pH values, ammonia nitrogen and protozoa number were 6.26±0.11—6.76±0.28, 22.06±7.54—36.38±9.67(mg/100ml)and 65.83±26.90—104.66±37.98(thousand/mm~3) respectively. While feeding them on rations of lower content of DCP the ammonia nitrogen and protozoa numbers significantly decreased to 9.76± 2.02—1.4.60±1.53 and 41.14±5.96-41.33±3.27.Adding the same amount of urea to rations in which DE and DCP were slightly higher over feeding standard, the pH values, ammonia nitrogen and protozoa in rumens of experimental animals were 6.60±0.09—7.02±0.11, 50.53±11.55—85.71±12.13, 68.92±25.36—129.75±41.04 respectively. All indices were higher than those of animals fed on rations without urea. Adding urea to rations with lower levels of DCP decreased the ammonia nitrogen (to 36.85±3.94—44.02±16.18) and protozoa numbers(to 62.83±17.99±81.02±6.63 )as compared to adding urea to rations in which the DCP levels were higher.
