Effect of Sludge-Straw Mixture Biochar on Soil Properties and Plant Growth

With unreasonable human activities, soil degradation is becoming more and more serious. Sludge based biochar can effectively reduce the environmental risk caused by directly agricultural use of sludge, however, it is also restricted by its low organic carbon content and poor improvement effects. Thus, biochar was prepared from a mixture of sewage sludge and cornstalk(SCBC) in this study. The effects of SCBC on soil properties and plant growth were investigated by using ryegrass pot assays(120 d) cultured with different application rates. The results showed that the addition of straw significantly increased the organic carbon content, specific surface area and pore diameter of the SCBC. The biochar with 30% straw had the maximum adsorption potential. SCBC could effectively promote the growth of ryegrass. The SCBC30 with application rate of 3% increased 7-day germination rate by 23.53% and biomass by 66.67%. Mixed biochar increased soil cation exchange capacity, microbial biomass carbon, alkali-hydrolyzed nitrogen and rapidly available phosphorus, and was the best at 3% or 4%. The survey results indicated SCBC could effectively improve the soil environment and realize reasonable recycling of sludge. The best soil improvement effect was the SCBC with an application of 3%.
