Research on Selection of Fuelwood Species and Their Silvicultural Techniques in the Sichuan Basin

Through experiments on introduction of fuelwood species abroad and at home and selection of native fuelwood species in the Sichuan Basin researches were conducted on their planting density, first felling age and rotation. The results have shown that,among 8 introduced species, Zenia insignis is a suitable species for growing in the Sichuan Basin while Leucaena leucocephala cv. 'Salvador' , Acaciasii and A. dealbata are only suitde for growing in part of regions,-among 13 native species,Alms cremas-togyne, Robinia pseudoacia,Quercus acutissima, Q. vaTiabilis,Coriaria sinica,Glyceria tonglensis are comparatively fine fuelwood species. The rational density of fuelwood forest of A. cremastogyne, R. pseudoacia and C. sinica is 10,000 stems/ha while that for Q. acutissima and Q. variabilis ranges form 6,000 to 7,000 stems/ha. And 1 meter spacing between rows is fit for G. tongletisis. For fuelwood forests of A. cremastogyne, R. pseudoacia, Q. acutissima and Q. variabilis, their first felling age is not more than 5 years,with a rotation of 3 to 6 years. The first felling age of C. sinica fuelwood forest is 3 to 4 years with a rotation of 2 to 3 years. G. tonglensis should be stumped a year after planting and then harvested every year. The rationality in planting density,first felling age and rotation will enable some selected species to increase their biomass by 1 to 2. 5 times.
