“In Situ Urbanization” in the Desakota Region of the Surrounding Area of Large Cities:Case Studies from Fuzhou Municipality

SHAO Huai-you,ZHU Yu (School of Geography,Fujian Normal University,Fuzhou 350007,China)
Since the late 20th century, the border between urban and rural areas has become blurred and ‘in situ urbanization’has been playing important role in the proc ess of urbanization in the ‘Desakota region’of the surrounding areas of large cities in China.Taking Fuzhou Municipality where in situ urbanization is well de veloped as a case study, this paper examined the present situation and future de velopment of its Desakota region from the perspective of both its physical area and population size.It suggested that in planning the development of large citie s,great importance should be attached to in situ rural-urban transformation of local residents in the Desakota regions,to migration of urban residents from u rban core to the Desakota regions, and to the incorporation of the Desakota regi ons into the overall planning of large cities.
