Effects of clarithromycin on Staphylococcus aureus biofilm

Objective:To investigate the influence of clarithromycin on Staphylococcus aureus biofilm formation and synergism of antibacterial activites between clarithromycin and ofloxacin on staphylococcus aureus.Methods: In vitro staphylococcus aureus biofilm were cultivated with 0.22 μm aperture micropore film.The MICs of clarithromycin and ofloxacin were measured;Staphylococcus aureus BF was stained with AgNO3 and the morphological structure was observed by Scanning electron microscopy(SEM);The viable bacterial in BF were counted separately by serial dilution.Results:The BF of staphylococcus aureus was formed steadily after a week.The viable bacterial amount showed when clarithromycin of 1 /16 MIC and 1 /4 MIC combined with ofloxacin alone was applied respectively,bactericidal activity of ofloxacin to Staphylococcus aureus within the BF was enhanced significantly(P0.05).Conclusions: Clarithromycin was considered to enhance significantly the bacterial sensitivity to ofloxacin on staphylococcus aureus in biofilm.
