Evaluation of Grain Dehydration Related Traits in Maize F_(2:3) Progeny Derived from Tropical and Temperate Inbreds

Tropical maize germplasm plays an important role in current breeding practice because it has advantage in yield related traits.However,one disadvantage of tropical germplasm is its slower kernel dehydration.The use of temperate germplasm to improve the dehydration traits of tropical materials has become one of the focus of breeders.In this study,105 F2: 3progeny of the temperature maize inbred line HCL645 and the tropical maize inbred line ZHL908 were used as materials.The kernel moisture content of the F2: 3progeny at different stages after pollination was measured and the related kernel dehydration rate was calculated.The variation of kernel moisture content-related traits in offspring was evaluated and the temperature-heat effect was investigated.The types and improvement direction of kernel moisture content in maize germplasm improvement process were examined.The results showed that the kernel moisture content of F2: 3progeny decreased responding to the increasing of time after pollination,with fitted equation to be y =-17. 9 In( x) + 47. 83,R2=0. 987,and the kernel moisture content generally descended.The kernel dehydration rate of F2: 3progeny also decreased along with the increasing of time after pollination,with fitted equation to be y =-1.22 In( x) +1. 980,R2= 0. 978,and the kernel dehydration rate is generally reduced. These results would provide some useful evidence for the improvement of tropical maize germplasm in future maize breeding practice.
