Water temperature model test for a multi-level power intake of large deep reservoir

Physical model tests of water temperature were conducted to analyze the multi-level power intake of the Jinping stage-I hydropower station.To simulate the density stratified flow in this intake,a conversion formula of temperature stratification between the model and prototype was derived by buoyancy similarity.In the test a method of layered heating of upstream inflow was used to maintain stable profiles of velocity and temperature at the boundaries,and the influence of different operating conditions on the temperature of discharged water were studied quantitatively.The results show that the intake operation causes changes in the fields of water temperature and velocity upstream to the intake,and that under the flow rate of 674m3/s,these changes are significant over a distance of as far as 600m.In the period of lower temperature discharge from March to May,use of two and half layers of stoplog can cause a temperature rise of 0.9℃ to 2.4℃.The resulting temperature is close to natural river temperature and it favors the habitat restoration in the river downstream.
