Analysis of impacts on Dongting Lake by flood control of Songzi sluice under operation of Three Gorges project

After operation of Three Gorges project,flood control of the Yangtze River in the urban area of Jingzhou city can meet the standard of 100-year frequency flood,providing favorable conditions for building a sluice at the Songzi outlet of Dongting Lake.To analyze the impact of flood control by the Songzi sluice,numerical simulations of typical floods in 1935,1954 and 1998 were made in this work,by using the flow and sediment mathematical model of the Yangtze River and Dongting Lake.The present study focuses on three issues: the flood control situation of the middle Yangtze under the operation of the sluice,the effect of peak-alternation regulation on the Lishui River,and the tendency of sediment deposition.The results show that operation of Songzi sluice has significant impact on flood control in the Dongting area,but insignificant in the urban area of Jingzhou.This is favorable to flood control of the Yangtze in the Chenghan reach.Besides,it will cause a slight increase in sediment deposition before the sluice,while insignificant influence on sediment erosion-deposition in the other river reaches.
