Central Allocation/Random Contention Based Access Control in APON System

A new kind of Medium Access Control (MAC) protocol called central allocation/contention access protocol based on G.983 specification was proposed. It can more efficiently allocate ATM passive optical network (PON) bandwidth resource. Markov chain was employed to describe the dynamic property of the system and the equilibrium probability mass function was derived. The numerical result demonstrates that this new protocol can improve the system's performance.
