Influence of Diamond-like Carbon-Based Multi-Layer Coating on Fretting Wear of 9Cr18 Stainless Steel

The influence of diamond like carbon based multiplayer coating prepared by plasma source ion implantation (PSII) on fretting wear of 9Cr18 stainless steel was investigated. The results show that some nitrides, such as CrN, Cr 2N and Fe 3N, have formed in the nitrogen implanted layer. Fretting performance reveals that the fretting wear resistance of 9Cr18 substrate increases greatly after PSII treatment. Moreover, the as prepared DLC based multilayer coating exhibits better fretting resistance than the N implanted layer, which is mainly due to the high hardness and the low friction coefficient of the outermost DLC film.
