Antiferromagnetic Distortion and Formation of High Damping Twins in γMn-Based Alloys

The lattice distortion caused by paramagnetic→antiferromagnetic transition in γ Mn Cu alloy was evaluated according to the relationship between the lattice distortion and the magnetic long range order parameter. The calculation and experimental results are compared. It is revealed that the correlation between the antiferromagnetic ordering and high damping twins also exists in other γ Mn based alloys. The high damping capacity of γ Mn Fe alloy is experimental confirmed. The tetragonal distortion caused by paramagnetic→antiferromagnetic transition both in γ Mn Cu and γ Mn Fe alloys can trigger the formation of micro twins, it can also introduce martensitic transformation on some conditions. The physical nature of the high damping capacity of γ Mn based alloys was discussed.
