Introducing Isochronous Communication Servicesinto OSI Protocol Stack

Ma Dianguang Pan Zushan(Department of Information and Control Engineering, Shanghai Jiaotong University)
By using Open Systems Interconnection Reference Model a method of introducing isochronous communication services in OSI protocol stack is described. It is implemented in Novell Network Integrated Computing Architecture. This method can provide isochronous communication services on the premise of reserving all the original services and extend computer network presentation information types from discrete media such as text, graphics, and still image to continuous media such as voice, audio, and video, for the realization of multimedia communications in computer networks. Protocols designed by this method can run on 4 operating systems, more than 30 networks and more than 100 network adapters, especially are suitable for environments of LAN interconnection, so it is very valuable for practical applications.
