STUDIES ON INHERITANCE OF PHOTOPERIOD-SENSITIVE GENIC MALE-STERILE GENES AND ITS APPLICATION ON INTERSUBSPECIFIC HETEROSIS IN RICE (Oryza sativa L. )

The spikelet fertility of 6 indica photoperiod-sensitive genie male-sterile rice (PGMSR) and 5 japonica PGMSR was evaluated to identify fertility transformation of PGMSR under natural day length of Shanghai area in 1991 (one crop season). The significant fertility transformation and stable sterility were found in 5 japonica PGMSR. The fertility transformation of 6 indica PGMSR was nonsignificant and influenced by temperature or interaction between temperature and day length. Crosses between PGMSR and japonica lines were made and fertility segregations of 17 hybrids F2 populations, 6 (japonica PGMSR/japonica∥ japonica PGMSR/japonica ) F1, 4 (japonica PGMSR ∥japonica PGMSR/japonica ) F1 and 9 doubled-haploid populations (H2) generated through in vitro anther culture from (japonica PGMSR/japonica) F1 were observed to study inheritance of photoperiodsensitive genie male-sterile genes under natural day length in Shanghai during 1990 ̄1992.The ratio of sterile plants to fertile plants in japonica PGMSR/Nongken58 and japonica PGMSR/japonica was 1: 3 and 1: 15, respectively. The ratio of sterile plants to fertile plants in anther-derived populations (H2) and (PGMSR∥japonica∥PGMSR/japonica)F1 was 1∶3. The ratio of sterile to fertile plants in (PGMSR∥PGMSR/japonica)F1 was 1∶1.The resluts showed that Nongken58s resulted from the mutation of one recessive photoperiodsensitive gene locus of Nongken58. The photoperiod-sensitive male-sterile genes in Nongken58s were allelic to those in PGMSR 700ls,5088s and N5047s which derived from Nongken58s.The photoperiod-sensitive male-sterility was governed by two pairs of independent major recessive genes.Crosses betwwen PGMSR and japonica lines,wide compatibility varieties(WCV)(indica or japonica) were made to evaluate heterosis of major agronomic traits.The higher heterosis of major agronomic traits was found in two-line intersubspecific ca(WCV)F1 (japonica PGMSR/japonica WCV)F1 was 63.81%and 52.05%,47.80% and 61.54%,respectively.
