STUDIES ON FEATURES OF CALABASH-SHAPED LEAVES OF RICE PLANTS AND THEIR UTILIZATION IN RICE PRODUCTION

Observations made by the authors in 1989~1994 on 45 rice varieties including hybridized combination and seed parent varieties showed that the rice produced two types of calabash-shaped leaves during the life cycle;the first type of calabash-shaped leaves emerged at tillering stage of transplanted rice,resulting from damage by transplantation,when rice shoots were transplanted at N-leaf stage,the (N + 2)th leaf and the (N + 3) th leaf were usually first type of calabash-shaped leaves;second type of calabash-shaped leaves emerged at panicle initiation stage,resulting from elongation,the age of the first leaf of this type from bottom was the number of elongated internodes of related variety minus 2 ; usually the varieties with 4 elongated internodes produced at last 2 calabash-shaped leaves,those with 5 elongated internodes produced 3 calabashshaped leaves,those with 6 elongated inter-nodes produced 4 calabash-shaped leaves. The features of calabash-shaped leaves can be used as diagnosis criteria for adjuding rice leaf age in field as well as rice growth process,and so the flowering stage will be forecasted and regulated by determining leaf age of hybrid' s seed parents and panicle initiation process. They can be also used as the basis of making scientifically fertilizer application and field management.
