Application of Block Lanczos Method to Wind-induced Responses of Dome-like Roofs

A direct superposition of block Lanczos vectors to analyze wind-induced responses of large roofs was presented.The Lanczos method with application to a single initial-load vector was extended to include more general dynamic loads which may be presented as a linear combination of multiple initial- load vectors.Due to the orthogonality of vectors in the Lanczos block and the orthogonality between the Lanczos blocks,the motion equations of the roof structure were transformed into a banded-form block tridiagonal matrix.This approach provides for not only an efficient time stepping solution but also an effi- cient frequency domain solution.The initial load vectors of roof structures subjected to fluctuating wind load may be obtained using the proper orthogonal decomposition by which the fluctuating wind field was separated into a combination of principal coordinates and covariance modes,where the principal coordi- nates are only depended on time and the covariance modes are only depended upon space.Based on the wind load acquired from wind tunnel tests of a dome-like roof model,the vertical displacement responses of the roof were calculated by using block Lanczos method and traditional methods.The efficiency and ac- curacy of block Lanczos method were discussed.
