Transforming growth factor β (TGF β) levels in the supernatant of glomeruli and mesangial cells conditioned culture media were measured withan standard bioa-ssay system. The results showed that both glomeruli and mesangial cells were capable of producing certain amount of TGF β. Glomeruli only liberated latent form of TGF β, while mesangial cells produced about 10% active form of TGF β. Considering the unique role of TGF β in regulating cell growth and extracellular matrix metabolism, TGF β secreted by glomeruli and mesangial cells might be important in maintaining the normal glomerular structure and function.
