Tingwei is the main judicial officer in the Han Dynasty. He is in charge of judging the crime of high-ranking officers, imperial kinsmen and capital felony. Making some laws and conducting disputed case in the empire is also his duty. Under the political pattern of imperial power being the highest, tingweis power is restricted by other officers. As a judicial officer, tingwei should understand the laws. After Empiror Hanwudi, knowing some Confucianism classics is also essential for tingwei, which is connected with the change of politics and culture of the Han dynasty. Tingwei exercises authority depending on his staff.
