Relief Acts occupied a very important place in the history of American land system. It provided timely aid to the poor pioneer farmers, and promoted the development of the west. The relief legislation reflected the fierce political, economic and ideological struggle among various land disposing schools, political interest groups and different areas of the country. The relief acts were made under the great pressure of the west. The evolution of relief legislation mirrored the course of American land system that was becoming more and more democratic.
