The Discourse of Civilization and the Imperial Culture:A Debate on Missionary Looting in Beijing after the Boxer Uprising

There was a heated debate on looting in Beijing between Mark Twain and American missionaries after the Boxer Uprising.By examining the debate,this paper discovers that both sides of the debate invoked the discourse of civilization in their arguments.By supporting American expansion and justifying American empire-building,this discourse of civilization constituted an imperial culture.
