On the Historical Value of "The Virginian:A Horseman of the Plains"

Owen Wister published his first famous novel "The Virginian:A Horseman of the Plains" in 1902.As a western cowboy novel,"The Virginian" was related to the American social and cultural history at the turn of the 20th century.It expressed the spirit of "American dream" in the Gilded Age,reflected the contradictions and conflicts between East and West during the development of Western stock-raising,and revealed the social,economic and political developments of Wyoming."The Virginian" is an influential novel which has great historical significance.At the same time,restricted by the times and the stand of the author,the novel stood on the side of big rancher.It’s cowboy image led to the formulation of American cowboy novel.
