Objective To appraise the changes of matrix metalloproteinas (MMPs) levels in serum and syno-vial fluid of patients with osteoarthritis and rheumatoid arthritis and their clinical significances. Methods The serum and synovial fluid samples from 17 healthy persons (central group), 33 patients with OA (OA group) and 10 patients with RA (RA group) were collected and studied separately, The levels of MMP-1, 2, 3 and 9 were measured by ELISA, and the statistical differences between these groups were analyzed. Results The RA and OA serum levels of MMP-2, 3, 9 were significantly higher than those of the contral. The RA and OA synovial fluid levels of MMP-1,2,3,9 were also significantly higher than those of the contral. The RA serum levels of MMP-1, 2, 3 were significantly higher than those of OA. Levels of MMP-1, 2,3,9 were also significantly higher in RA synovial fluid than those of OA. Conclusions The levels of MMPs are elevated in OA and RA, moreover the levels of RA are higher than those in OA.
