Development of Random Signal Radars

One form of random signal radars is a radar whose transmitting signal is a microwave noise source or is modulated by a lower frequency white noise source. Compared with the common radars, random signal radar has some inherent excellent properties. The development of random signal radar over the past 30 years is described in this paper. Conventional methods are summarized, such as correlation, spectrum analysis and anticorrelation. Some typical random signal radar systems are introduced, for example, noise frequency modulation continual wave (CW) radar, sine plus noise frequency modulation CW radar and random binary phase-coded CW radar. Finally, the development prospects of random signal radars are analyzed.
