Variational Approach to Image Enhancement and Pseudo-Color Mapping

A novel approach to gray-level image enhancement is presented. It linearly amplifies the original image′s contrast to construct the contrast field of the object image. Under the dynamic range constraint of the gray-level for displaying or printing, the enhanced image can be obtained via the variational approach. The image has the local information, which is the most close to the object contrast field. Furthermore, the dynamic range of the contrast is compressed and this algorithm is applied to the intense component of a color image(HSV model). And based on the statistics of perceptual attribution, employing a pseudo-color mapping method, a more comfortable result image is obtained. This approach does not need the enhancement region pre-assigned by people. Experimental results verify the effectiveness of the image enhancement algorithm, especially in the case of that the image has very weak and attractive contrast information.
