Research on the interaction between the viaduct and subway structure under horizontal earthquake loads

Based on the reconstruction project of Jiefang Road in Taiyuan, the interaction between the bridge structures and subway facilities under the horizontal earthquake loads was investigated in this study. The three-dimensional finite element dynamic models, including the viaduct, subway station and the combined structure of the viaduct and subway facility, were performed, considering the gravel isolation layer. The seismic analyses of the structures were carried out. Due to the cushioning of the gravel layer, the internal forces of the piers of the viaduct under the combined structureswere lower than those under the single viaduct. When the earthquake action is greater, the reduction of internal forces will also be more significant. The viaduct has less influence on the subway structure.The variationin thickness of the gravel layer has a certain effect on the viaduct, but the influence is minor. When the thickness of the gravel layer becomes smaller, the shear force and bending moment of the subway columns tend to be greater, but the amount of the increase is limited.
