The V/A-tòu(le) Structure and Categories of the Predicate Verb/Adjective

V/A-tòu(le)(V/A透了) is a polysemous structure in modern Chinese.Synchronically,the semantic features or categories of the predicate verb/adjective are closely related to the functions of tòu.The predicate verbs/adjectives can be categorized according to their different meanings.The categories of the predicate verb/adjective are largely corresponding to the order of their occurrences diachronically.It is found,after a diachronic and synchronic investigation,that the meaning of tòu as complement has developed in such a direction:result state degree.To help the student to have a better understanding and grasp of this structure and others of the same kind,textbooks and dictionaries should improve the explanation of the semantic association of polysemous notional and function words.
