China and International Order Revisited:A Political Sociology Perspective

Pu Xiaoyu PhD Candidate for Department of Political Science, the Ohio State University,U.S.A.
Borrowing the notion of "the art of resistance" from political sociology, the author aims to re-conceptualize China's strategic behaviors and thinking in the existing Western-dominated international order. The art of Chinese resistance under unipolarity can be divided into two dimensions: "rightful resistance" as strategic behaviors within the existing order and "everyday resistance" as rethinking beyond the existing order. To re-evaluate the relationship between China and international order,it is necessary to go beyond the dichotomy between status quo and revisionist powers. How China learns and internalizes the existing international norms is just one aspect of socialization process, while how China is shaping the evolution of international norms is the other under-theorized aspect of socialization process. Furthermore,China is actively exploring various types of future international order,in which "negotiated order" is a promising ideal type with important theoretical and practical implications.
