Study on Formation Diversity in the Vegetation of Shanxi Based on GIS

Qiu Lichuan;Wang Shangyi;Geography Science College,Taiyuan Normal University;
Spatial diversities of the vegetation in Shanxi are studied according to counties and cities of Shanxi and formation.Biological meanings about formation diversity index are discussed.The study will provide a basis for diversity of plant communities,vegetation landscape planning,environmental planning et al.It will be significance for utilization and protection of biodiversity.The number of formation was counted and the area of every formation was calculated in every county or city after the map of counties and cities in Shanxi and the map of formation were overlaid in ArcGIS software.Diversity indices of formation in every county or city were calculated after vegetation,forest,scrub,herbaceous vegetation and cultivated vegetation were classified.There is formation of vegetation in every county or city of Shanxi.The number of formation is more in most counties or cities,but is most in the north of Shanxi where is transitional zone between forest and grass steppe and in the south-center of Shanxi.The range in the north of Shanxi is bigger and get together,but that in the south-center of Shanxi is smaller and disperse.Formations of forest,scrub,herbaceous vegetation or cultivated vegetation distribute almost in all counties or cities of Shanxi.The number of formation in forest is most in many counties or cities of central and southern Shanxi,but that in herbaceous vegetation is most in many counties or cities of northern Shanxi.Forest is similar to herbaceous vegetation in the number of formation and their number is more than other vegetations in the counties or cities of transitional area between the center and north of Shanxi.Although one county or city in Shanxi is different from another county or city in area,formation diversity is almost not affected by size of county or city because Gleason index is highly correlated with the number of formation.Shannon-Weiner index,Pielou index and Simpson index are correlated with the number of formation,but they have some differences because correlation in Shannon-Weiner index is highest in forest,lowest in cultivated vegetation,similar and lower in scrub and herbaceous vegetation.Herbaceous vegetation is obviously lower than forest,scrub and cultivated vegetation in correlation of Pielou index,especially Pielou index is not correlated the number of formation in herbaceous vegetation.Correlation in Simpson index is highest in cultivated vegetation,lowest in scrub,similar and higher in forest and herbaceous vegetation.
