Diversity of river morphology and diversity of bio-communities

DONG Zhe-ren(China Institute of Water Resources and Hydropower research, Beijing 100038,China)
The unity of bio-community and environment is expounded and the characteristics of river morphology are classified into five categories. It is pointed out that the diversity of river morphology is the basis of the diversity of bio-communities in a river basin. The existence of water projects may lead to the uniformity and discontinuity of river morphology, which may cause the reduction of diversity of river bio-communities and threaten the river eco-system. It is recommended that considerations should be given to the protection and rehabilitation of river morphology before the construction of water projects so as to meet the need of the establishment of a healthy eco-system.
