Nasopharyngeal Mucosa Epithelium Seen in the Biopsy Tissues

Zong Yongsheng (Shantou University Medical College)
Basing on the microscopic survey of more than 20,000 nasop- pharyngeal biopsy tissue slides, the author gives an summary description on the structure and cell types of the mucosal epithelium for the pur- pose of helping the pathologists to make diagnose and study nasopharyngeal carcinoma. The great majority of nasopharyngeal mucosa epithelium is of colum- nar type, which consists of four cell types, namely, ciliated columnar cells, mucoid cells, intermediate cells and basal cells. All these cells were described cytologically and mucin-cytochemically in detail. Most of the glands seen in the nasopharyngeal mucosa are sero-muc- inous,The structure of these glands and the characteristics of the muc- inous substances secreted by the glands were also demonstrated.
