Effects of α-NAA and UV-B radiation on photosynthetic pigments and activities of protective enzymes in Trichosanthes kirilowii Maxim leaves

Effects of α-NAA and UV-B radiation on photosynthetic pigments and activities of protective enzymes in greenhouse-grown Trichosanthes kirilowii Maxim leaves were investigated. The results showed that addition of 2mg/L α-NAA could increase the content of chlorophyll and carotenoids and the activities of superoxide dismutase(SOD), catalase(CAT), peroxidase(POD), and ascorbate peroxidase (ASP), but did not significantly affect membrane permeability and lipid peroxidation (MDA content) in leaves. Exposure to 0.029J/(m2·s) UV-B radiation significantly decreased chlorophyll a and chlorophyll b content and the activities of SOD, CAT, POD and ASP in leaves, but significantly increased the membrane permeability and MDA content. Compared to exposure to UV-B radiation, addition of α-NAA and exposure to UV-B radiation together increased the content of photosynthetic pigments and the activities of SOD, CAT, POD and ASP. CAT was significantly increased; however, the joint treatment decreased membrane permeability and MDA content. These results suggested that: (1) UV-B radiation induced the degradation of photosynthetic pigments and led to the decrease of photosynthesis; (2) Activities of protective enzymes SOD, CAT, POD and ASP were decreased by UV-B radiation, which resulted in membrane lipid peroxidation and enhancement of membrane permeability, and consequent damage of membrane structure. However, addition of α-NAA partly alleviate the damage of Trichosanthes kirilowii Maxim leaves caused by exposure to UV-B radiation. Activities of SOD, CAT, POD and ASP were increased by the addition of α-NAA, which maintain the balance between the production and elimination of producing and eliminating of O ·- 2 and H 2O 2, thereby ensuring the stability of membrane structure. The analysis indicated that the treatment of plants with addition of α-NAA enhance the resistance to UV-B irradiation, and is therefore beneficial to the growth of plants.
