ULTRASTRUCTURAL STUDY ON CHINESE PEA ROOT NODULES

Han Shan-hua (Cell Biology Laboratory,Lanzhou University) A.F.Yang (Chemistry and Biology Research Institute,Ottawa,Canada)
The ultrastructure of Chinese pea rootnodules(Pisum sativum cv Zhangjiachuan)hasbeen examined by transmission electron mi-croscopy.During development Chinese pea rootnodules undergoes a series of ultrastructuralchanges including the release of bacteria fromthe infection thread, the appearance of nuc-leolus-associated body, changes in the nuc-leus and the cytoplasm of the host cell afterthe release of the bacteria, the fusion of peri-bacteroid membrane, and the fine structureof uninfected cells. These changes are described in detail andthe significance of the structural changes andtheir relationship to the development of rootnodules are discussed.
