The ultrastructure of Chinese pea rootnodules(Pisum sativum cv Zhangjiachuan)hasbeen examined by transmission electron mi-croscopy.During development Chinese pea rootnodules undergoes a series of ultrastructuralchanges including the release of bacteria fromthe infection thread,the appearance of nuc-leolus-associated body,changes in the nuc-leus and the cytoplasm of the host cell afterthe release of the bacteria,the fusion of peri-bacteroid membrane,and the fine structureof uninfected cells. These changes are described in detail andthe significance of the structural changes andtheir relationship to the development of rootnodules are discussed.
