SOMATIC EMBRYOGENESIS FROM TISSUE CULTURE OF SAINFOIN AND ITS EMBRYOLOGICAL OBSERVATIONS

Calli of sainfoin (Onobrychis viciaefoliaScop) were inducted from stem and root onLS medium supplemented with kinetin (1 mg/1) and 6-BA (1 mg/1) after 4 weeks.Thecalli were then transferred to LS mediumwith 6-BA (1 mg/1).After 3—4 weeks,so-matic embryos were formed on calli.Embryodeveloped into complete plantlets on filtersaturated with hormone-free LS liquid me-dium.Embryological examination of calli ofsainfoin revealed all stages of embryo deve-lopment from a single embryonic cell to anadvanced stage of an embryo.It seems thatthe origin of the individual sainfoin plant inthis study is from single embryonic cell,sogenetic selection at the cellular level in sain-foin tissue culture may now be possiblethrough somatic embryogenesis.
