Rail stress measurement with critically refracted longitudinal waves

In this paper, a method for measuring rail stress with critically refracted longitudinal (L_(CR)) waves is described. This technique can improve efficiency of rail stress measurement, reduce cost of maintenance, and enhance safety of the railway. An experiment system is established, and data are collected and analyzed based on the linear relation between stress and the ultrasound velocity. Errors in the stress measurement are less than 5%. The results indicate feasibility of measuring the rail stress by using ultrasonic waves.
