Assessment of heart tumors by real-time three-dimensional echocardiography

Objective: To explore the feasibility and the value of real-time three-dimensional echocardiography(RT-3DE) in heart tumors. Methods: Seven Patients with a histologically proven diagnosis of heart tumors were examined by RT-3DE of echo machine Sonos 7500. Three-dimensional image date-base was post-processed using 3D work-station. The results were compared with those measured by two-dimensional echocardiography and surgery results or MRI results. Results: RT-3DE could provide more information about the spatial position, shape ,size and sufficient anatomic relationship of heart tumors than those of 2-dimensional echocardiography. There are an excellent correlation and high degree agreement for left-right dimension, up and down dimension, and pre-post dimension between RT-3DE echocardiography and operation results or MRI results(left-right dimension:r=0.99, standard error of estimate SEE=2mm; longitudinal dimension:r=0.97, SEE=2.2mm; pre-post dimension: r=0.98,SEE=2.1mm),but 2-dimensional echocardiography methods yielded weaker correlations, large standard errors(left-right dimension:r=0.89, SEE=6mm; up and down dimension:r=0.91, SEE=4mm;pre-post dimension:r=0.89,SEE=5mm). Conclusions: RT-3DE provides a reliable method for qualitative and quantitative diagnosis of heart tumors.
