Corridor Belt Theory——An Exploratory Study of Chinese Frontier Governance Theory

XU Lili;
The center of China's frontier governance is neither in its heartland nor in its borderlands. Instead,it is in its ‘corridor belt'. Geologically,the corridor belt consists of the Great Wall,the Silk Road and the Yi- Tibetan Corridor; it is a husbandry- dominated area sandwiched between China's four major eco-cultural regions——the Mongolian Plateau in the north,the Gobi Oasis in the west,the Tibetan Plateau in the southwest and the plains in the east. Horizontally,the corridor belt interconnects the four major eco- cultural regions in China; vertically,the ancestors of the Chinese people originated in the corridor belt and spread around the belt to develop the frontiers of China. In terms of the interrelationship between China's heartland and frontiers,the corridor belt serves as a tie that links the two vying forces of centralization and centrifugation. Now that Chinese frontiers are faced with various problems,we should not overlook the roles the corridor belt may play: a cohesive force to unite people of the country,a bridge to connect with other countries and a key to unlock the sources and the cruxes of specific problems facing the frontiers.
