Ethnic Characteristics and Student Academic Performance——Based on a survey of Tibetan college students in Tibetan Autonomous Region

The academic performance of ethnic minority students has important influence on their future personal development and is also one of the focuses of China's ethnic educational policy. Two approaches,i. e. cultural differences and structural factors,have been adopted to account for the differences in academic performance between ethnic minority students and Han students. However,this study,based on the survey data of 1 288 college students in Tibet,has found that the scores of students from Tibetan families are remarkably lower than those of students from Han families and that the ethnic characteristics of a student's family,rather than structural factors such as class and urbanrural divide,are an essential factor affecting his or her score in national college entrance examination.Ethnic characteristics of a student's family reflect the cultural characteristics of his or her family and affect their academic performance directly( e. g. through the student's competence in Chinese and Tibetan languages) and indirectly( e. g. through parents' attitude towards schooling). Therefore,it will be crucial to consider ethnic cultural differences in developing ethnic education and training senior ethnic professionals. Given the social development of modern China,special efforts should be made to help ethnic minority students' master standard Chinese language in order to improve their performance in science subjects and national college entrance examination and provide them with more employment opportunities.
