The newest progress on in situ stress determination technique is investigated.The in situ stress distribution,test technique in laboratory and in filed, calculation and applications in petroleum exploration and development are the key concerned aspects. Test methods including hydraulic fracturing, wellbore breakout, acoustic emission (Kaiser's effect) are analyzed. Their principle, advantage, weakness and future development were discussed. Some valuable ideas about in situ stress applications in the design of oil development program, hydraulic fracturing and refracturing, evaluation of oil abundance zone, prediction of tectonic movement related abnormal formation pressure, oriented perforating and formation fracture zone estimation are presented. Some suggestions on theoretical study and practical application of in situ stress determination are proposed.
