A Study on Beer Barley from Australia(Continued)

A regional test of beer barely varieties was conducted in the spring barley region of North China from 1984 to 1985. Tow years of test in Shenyang show that "ShennongE--1", the selected line from Australian tworow barley, and two-row barley rarities from Zhejiang Province and Shanghai City can mature between the 25th-28th of June. The two poly-row barley varieties from abroad and the two-row barley varieties from Heilongjiang Province and Inner Mongolia can mature between the 6th and 9th of July, which is too late for planting the next crop. Generally speak- ing, the yield of late maturing varieties is higher than that of early maturing varieties, but "Shennong E--1" yielded 3357kg/ha and ranked second among the tested varieties. As regards grain quality, the thousand kernel weight of the early maturing varieties may reach 47~49g, and the protein content of grain of the tested varieties is 12. 77~13. 32per cent higher than the normal. On the contrary, the thousand kernel weight of late mature varieties is slightly lower and the protein content of grain of the tested varieties is below 12 per cent. The thousand kernel we- ight of the variety "Shennong E--1" is well over 50g, and the protein content is 11. 71 per cent. The grain quality of this variety meets the needs of brewing process. Conccerning agronomic characters in terms of yield and grain quality, the defects of the poly-row beer darley are the lower head rate of tillers growing from each plant, the larger leaf area, the high stalk/grain ratio and the low economic coefficient. The two-row beer barley performance is totally different from that of the poly-row beer barley.
