Ultrastructure of the Median Neurosecretory Cells in Brain of Antheraea pernyi

The median neurosecretory cells (NSCs) of the first day pupal brain of the Spring oak silkworm(Antheraea pernyi)were inves- tigated by means of electronic microscope observation. The result showed that these NSCs were oval in shape and monopolar,with nucleus unbranched in which a number of chromatin and a few nucleoli could be found. A characteristic feature of these median NSCs was the presence of many membrane--bound neurosecretory granules in the cytoplasm, clustering near the base of the axon; the granules could also be found within the axon. In addition, a plenty of rough endoplasmic reticulum was observed. The ultrastructural features indicated that the PTTH was being transported and released from the median NSCs, leading to the further development of the spring pupa.
