Therapeutic effects of loading dose sodium phenytoin on children with refractory epilepsy

Objective To study the method for controlling refractory epilepsy rapidly in children.Methods A loading dose of ndium phenytoin of 20mg· kg-1. d-1 at lst day, 10mg·kg -1 ·d-1 at 2nd and 3rd day,then maintenance dose 5mg· kg-1· d-1 were given to the loading group of 23 children. Nineteen children in the control group received 6mg· kg-1·d-1 every day during treatment. Drug concentration in the blood was monitored during treatment.Results The epilepsy seizures were controlled about mean 4 days earlier in loading group than that in contro group. There were significant difference about clinical effective rates and no significant difference about the rates of side effects between both groups. obvious individual difference was found about the effective free concentratbo of ndium pkenytion in serum.Coarlusfon Loading dose of aodium phenytoin is one effective method for treating the patients with control refractory eplepsy in children.
