Serum and cerebrospinal fluid interferon levels in rHu IFNα-2a treated patients with viral central nervous system infection

Zhang Yucai; Wang Daiming(The Children's Hospital of Shanghai Medical University, Shanghai,P. R. China)
objective To search for the interferon(IFN)levels in serum and cerebrospinal fluid(CSF) of the patients with viral central nervous system(CNS) infection. Methods Seventy cases of viral CNS infection treated with recombinant human interferon α- 2a(rHuIFNα - 2a), and quantitative levels of IFN in serum and CSP were detected by nhcro-cytopathic effect inhibition assay. Results The positive rate and mean concentration of serum IFN were 84. 3% (59/7o)and 8. 4IU/ml before treated with rHuIFN α-2a. The IFN positiverate(100% )and mean Jevels (26. 8IU/ml)were elevated renlarkably 2 hours after injection of rHuIFN α- 2a. However,IFN titers in CSF elevated slightly fron 61. 4 % (43/70) to 74. 3 % (52/70) .and from 9.1IU/ml to 1 1. 3 IU/ml respectively, there was no significant differences(p 0.05 ).Conclusion The data indicates that only small amout of IFN cross the blood brain barrier during inflammation of CNS infection.
