Relationship between Temperament and Recurrent Abdominal Pain in Children

Objective To investigate the relationship between temperament and recurrent abdominal pain(RAP) in children.Methods Sixty children with RAP pain were study group and the other 60 children were healthy control group.The study group included school children of 8 to 12 year-old,who suffered from abdominal pain received systematic treatment in the Abdominal Pain Department in the Sixth People′s Hospital from Aug.2004 to Jul.2007.And all of them were diagnosed in accordance RAP instead of organic diseases.The 2 groups were tested by utilizing Test of Chinese School Children Temperament Scale(CSTS) and the results were studied and analyzed by SPSS 13.0 software.Results The proportions of various temperament types in the observation group were:16.67% of the easy type,11.67% of the intermediate-easy type,13.33% of the difficulty type,23.33% of the intermediate-difficulty type and 35% of the slow-to-warm-up type.Then,the proportions of various temperament types in the healthy control group were:33.33% of the easy type,26.67% of the intermediate-easy type,10.0% of the difficulty type,16.67% of the intermediate-difficulty type and 13.33% of the slow-to-warm-up type.The fin-ding indicated that the distributions of the temperament types in the 2 groups were significantly different(χ2=33.45 P0.01).The scores in their temperament test between RAP group and healthy control group were showed a great difference in their rhythmicity,adaptability,mood and persistence(Pa0.05).However,there was no significant difference shown in levels of activity,approach-avoidance,intensity of reaction and attention to decentralization and the response threshold between the 2 groups(Pa0.05).Conclusions There is close relationship between RAP with psychological factors.The children in the slow-to-warm-up type is likely to suffer from the RAP.It is suggested that psychological treatment to the children with non-organic disease related to RAP.More attention should be paid to the children with temperament of slow-to-warm-up type,which may help eliminate the children′s negative emotions.
