Blood-Brain Barrier Associated Transporters and Refractory Epilepsy

XU Juan-yu,DENG Ya-xian,GAO Bao-qin(Department of Pediatrics,Beijing Tiantan Hospital Affiliated to Capital Medical University,Beijing 100050,China)
Epilepsy is a common disorder in neurology, most of the patients have good prognosis. But there are still about 20% to 30% patients transforming to refractory epilepsy, after 2 years of standard treatment. Some transport proteins of blood-brain barrier may induce drug resistance in refractory epilepsy, such as P-glycoprotein,breast cancer resistance protein,multi-drug resistance-associated protein and so on.And these transporters′ inhibitors such as verapamil, probenecid may contribute to the treatment of refractory epilepsy. This review introduces the relationship between these transport proteins and their drug resistance mechanism of refractory epilepsy.
