The study to determine the reinnervation of an end-to-side neurorrhaphy

ve To study reinnervation of an end - to - side neurorrhaphy and the resultant functional recovery in a rabbit model. Methods 20 unadult rabbits were randomized to one of two groups. The experimential group underwent an end - to - side neurorrhaphy of the distal peroneal nerve to the lateral pars of the right tibial nerve with removal of epineurial sheath. In the control group, the right peroneal nerve was sectioned, and a window of epineurium was stripped from the lateral pars of the tibial nerve. After 16 weeks, pin-sticking test, toe- extension reflex, retrograde nerve tracing, and the anterior tibial muscle mass measurements had been performed. Results Pin- sticking test and toe- extension reflex revealed poor recovery of sensory and mot or functions. The rate of the anterior tibial muscle mass indicated no functional recovery. Retrograde tracing showed that the count of the labelling sensory neurons was more than that of the labelling motor neurons, but the average rate of the latter was (67.72 ± 20.18) % ,and the other was (8.8 ± 2.90)%. It was inconsistant with resultant functional recovery. Conclusion The invalid reinnervation was the main cause of poor resultant functional recovery in this model.
