Effects of Lycopene Supplement on Oxygen Free Radical and Hemorheology of College Students after Exhaustive Exercise

Objective: To study the effects of lycopene supplement on oxygene free radical and hemorheology of human body after exhausting exercise. Objects and methods: 16 male college students of sports department were randomly divided into experimental group and control group,with in each group 8 people. The daily lycopene supplement amount of experimental group students was 15 mg for 28 consecutive days. The control group students took daily supplements of the same dose of placebo. The total serum SOD activity,the content of MDA in serum,erythrocyte SOD activity and blood rheology index of the subjects of the two groups were detected before and after 28 days of taking lycopene and placebo. Then the subjects of the two groups were on electric treadmill for an incremental load exhaustive exercise test. Immediately after exhaustive exercise,total serum SOD activity and the content of MDA in serum,erythrocyte SOD activity and blood rheology index were tested again. Results: 1) An exhaustive exercise can increase the total SOD activity in serum and erythrocyte SOD activity in experimental group subjects( P 0. 01),and increase the MDA content in serum of the control group( P 0. 01); an exhaustive exercise can also improve the whole blood viscosity,plasma viscosity,hematocrit,erythrocyte rigidity index,red blood cell count and erythrocyte deformation index both of control group and experimental group to different degrees. 2) 28 days of continuous lycopene supplement before exercise can increase SOD activity of the serum total in quiet state of experimental group students( P 0. 01),but also can reduce the whole blood high shear rate,shear viscosity and reduction viscosity in high shear( P 0. 05). In addition,comparing with the control group,the serum total SOD activity ofsubjects of the experimental group increased( P 0. 01),the content of MDA in serum decreased( P 0. 01),erythrocyte deformation index increased( P 0. 01),erythrocyte rigidity index decreased( P 0. 05) after exercise. Conclusions: 1)Exhaustive exercise can intensify erythrocyte lipid peroxidation in sports department students,and also can decrease blood rheology index after exercise. 2) Through taking lycopene a month in advance can effectively enhance the ability of anti free radical and can improve the blood rheology index of the college students after exercise to a certain extent.
