SURVEY OF THE SUPERIORITY OF HOMOLOGOUS RETENTION INTEX AS A GC CHARACTERIZATION PARAMETER OF FATTY ACIDS

We have been making a survey of the superiority of the Proposed homologous retention index to the usual GC characterization Parameters,the relative retention and the Kovats retention index, based on the analysis of variance of hierarchial data with five sources of variation, and have come to the conclusion that the relative standard deviations of the homologous retention index caused by the factors of concentration of stationary phase and column temperature are much smaller than those of the relative retention and the Kovats retention index. Therefore the homologous retention index is most precise. As the homologous retention index manifests more accurately the chrcmatographic behavior of chemical substances, it can be used more reliably for characterization purposes,and is expected to find broader applicability than the Kovats retention index. The Kovats retention index may be looked on as a special case of the homologous retention index when applied to paraffin hydrocarbons.
