Antidepressant Activities of Extracts from Gynostemma pentaphyllum(Thunb.) Makino

ObjectiveTo investigate the antidepressant effect of extracts from Gynostemma pentaphyllum(Thunb.) Makino(Cucurbitaceae)(GP) for the first time. MethodsThree models,the mouse forced swim test(FST),tail suspension test(TST) and open field test(OFT),were used to observe antidepressant-like activity of the 75% ethanol extract(JE) and the water extract(JW) isolated from GP. ResultsCompared with the model group(CMC-Na),JE(2.5,5 g/kg,ig) significantly reduced the immobility time in dose-dependent manners during the FST and the TST,while JW(2.5,5 g/kg,ig) did not.Meanwhile,there was no significant difference between JE and fluoxetine hydrochloride(FH). ConclusionJE isolated from GP exerts antidepressant activity and has the similar effect with the positive drug FH,while JW dose not.
