A Reinterpretation of the Conflict between Rationality and Irrationality--A Deconstructive Reading of Bartleby, the Scrivener: A Story of Wall Street

LI Ying-zi (Foreign Language Department Changshu Institute of Technology,Changshu Jiangsu 215500)
Bartleby, the Scrivener by Herman Merville, is a short story with symbolic significance. The story reveals a conflict between rationality and irrationality or a binary opposition of conformity and non-conformity. The story ends with the triumph of the former over the latter. A deconstructive reading of the story, indicates the author's ambivalent attitude towards this binary opposition. This attitude deconstructs the original theme of the story and displays his sympathy for and understanding of irrationality to great extent.
